Door Hardware Styles Explained: Rosettes, Backplates, Levers and Knobs

Door hardware is small, but it shapes how a door looks from across the room. Two pieces decide most of that look: the handle you hold and the plate behind it. Mix and match them, and the same door can feel modern, classic or somewhere in between.

Here’s what each part is, and how the combinations change your door.

The four parts, explained

Rosette (or rose). The small plate that sits behind a lever or knob, against the door. It covers the hole drilled for the latch. Rosettes come round, square or slim and rectangular. They keep the look light and minimal.

Backplate (or escutcheon plate). A taller plate that runs vertically behind the handle. It often wraps around a keyhole or a privacy turn. Backplates add presence and a more traditional, architectural feel.

Lever. A handle you press down to open the door. Levers can be straight, curved, flat or sculpted, and they’re the easiest to use.

Knob. A round or shaped handle you grip and turn. Knobs bring a classic, softer look.

Put simply: the lever or knob is the part you hold. The rosette or backplate is the frame around it. Choosing both together is what gives a door its character.

Five common combinations, illustrated

The handle decides how the door feels to use. The plate behind it decides how simple or formal it looks.

How each combination changes the look

Knob + round rosette. Timeless and simple. It feels at home in traditional and heritage houses, and it’s often the most budget-friendly option.

Lever + round rosette. The all-rounder. Soft enough for a traditional home, clean enough for a modern one. A safe choice when you’re not sure.

Lever + square rosette. Crisp and modern. The straight lines echo shaker doors, flat-panel doors and slim casings. A favourite in West Coast contemporary homes.

Lever + backplate. Polished and architectural. The taller plate gives the door more presence, which suits tall doors, formal rooms and character homes.

Knob + backplate. Vintage charm. Think heritage homes, Craftsman details and classic panel doors. Pair it with a warm finish like aged brass or oil-rubbed bronze.

Match the hardware to your home’s style

Home style Try this combination
Modern / West Coast contemporary Lever + square or slim rosette
Transitional Lever + round rosette
Modern farmhouse Lever or knob + round rosette, in matte black
Traditional Knob + round rosette, or lever + backplate
Heritage / Craftsman Knob or lever + backplate, in a warm finish

Three tips before you choose

  • Keep it consistent. Use the same plate shape and finish throughout the home so every room feels connected.
  • Look at the door and trim together. A square rosette next to a shaker door and square casing reads clean. A backplate on a slim modern slab can feel heavy.
  • Check the door prep. Most interior doors are bored for standard round hardware. Some backplates and mortise-style sets need different prep, so confirm before you order.
